Box Score The Wright State men's basketball team shot their way to a 61-50 victory over Samford on the second day of the Hispanic College Fund Classic. The Raiders shot 56-percent in the contest and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 28-19 at the Maravich Center on the Louisiana State University campus.
The Green and Gold jumped on the board first when Vaughn Duggins grabbed a defensive rebound that led to a jumper from DaShaun Wood on the other end. The Raiders built a five point lead twice in the opening minutes, but Samford connected on six three pointers and held a three point lead with just over six minutes left in the stanza.
At the 6:04 mark, Samford's Joe Ross Merritt slashed through the lane and converted the lay-up to give the Bulldogs a 25-22 lead. The Raiders would quickly go on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to secure a 33-25 lead.
Overall the Green and Gold ended the half on a 13-5 run and headed to the locker room with a five point lead, at 35-30. The Raiders connected on 65-percent of their shots from the field after twenty-minutes of play and never trailed by more than three points in the stanza.
In the second half, Drew Burleson shook his defender and knocked down a jumper to open the half, giving WSU a seven point advantage. Over the next four minutes the Bulldogs, now 6-5, would pull within two points at 36-38, but WSU responded with a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 48-38 with just 6:18 left in the contest.
In the game, Wood netted a game-high 20 points and freshman Todd Brown dropped in 12 points off the bench. Jordan Pleiman grabbed a game-high eight boards and connected on five-of-seven shooting for ten points.
The Raiders improve to 6-6 overall and will face off with Mississippi Valley State on December 29 at 6:00. The Raiders and Delta Devils will square off in the first game on the final day of the Hispanic College Fund Classic.
