Raiders Shoot Their Way Past St. Bonaventure 59-57

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team used an impressive second half to come from behind and defeat host St. Bonaventure 59-57 on Saturday. The Raiders got 17 points from senior guard DaShaun Wood and freshman Todd Brown recorded a career-high 13 points off the bench.

The Raiders allowed the first basket of the game to the Bonnies, before making a 7-0 run to take the lead. Scottie Wilson converted an offensive rebound into two points, followed by a Wood three pointer and a pair of free throws from Wilson, giving the Green and Gold an early 7-2 lead.

The Bonnies would answer a few minutes later when an offensive put-back off a missed three pointer capped off a comeback to tie the game at 13-13. The Raiders responded with a run of their own, started with a Wood pull-up jumper from the baseline. Brown the knocked down a three-pointer from the corner and Wood hit a jumper from ten feet, slashing into the lane and nailing the jumper.

In the last 2:48 of the first half, St. Bonaventure connected on three, three pointers and WSU went one-for-six from the field and after leading for most of the half, trailed 27-24. In the half, Wood netted nine points and Vaughn Duggins led all players with eight rebounds. Zarroyn Fereti led all players with 14 points, connecting on four-of-six three pointers.

The second half started much like the first, as SBU netted the first basket to push their lead to 29-24. Following the opening basket, Wood converted on a transition lay-up, Drew Burleson converted a basket on the inside and Will Graham slashed through the lane for two points. Graham then stole a pass at mid-court and raced to the other end for the lay-up and a 32-29 lead at the 16:15 mark.

The Green and Gold extended their lead to nine points mid-way through the second half with a seven-to-zero run. Drew Burleson capped the run with a back door lay-up on pass from Graham to make the score 53-44.

The Bonnies responded with an eleven-to-two run to knot the score at 55 apiece. Duggins would give the Raiders a two-point lead on a jumper, but SBU converted a lay-up on the other end to tie the score. For the second time in three games, Wood stepped to the line with only seconds remaining in the game and sank a pair of free throws to give the Raiders a 59-57 lead with nine seconds left. A last second desperation shot sailed just long to give WSU the victory.

In the game, Wood tallied 17 points and Brown netted 13 to pace the Raiders offense. The Green and Gold shot 43-percent for the game, to post their third victory of the season. Burleson posted a game-high nine rebounds and WSU connected on eight-of-nine free throws in the win. The Raiders have now trailed at half time in each of their three wins on 2006.

The Raiders cap off their three-game road trip with a trip to Huntington, WV on Wednesday, December 13 for a game against Marshall. The Raiders and Thundering Herd will tip-off at 7:00 and can be listened to live on 980 and 1340 AM or at WSURaiders.com with live play-by-play from Chris Collins.
