Box Score The Wright State men's basketball team shot 68 percent in the first half and 46 percent overall, but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee Panthers took control in the second half and went on to a 73-69 Horizon League win at the U.S. Cellular Arena Sunday afternoon.
A 9-1 WSU run, five coming from Todd Brown, gave the Raiders a 26-19 advantage at the 8:59 mark of the first half and the margin was 31-25 following a DaShaun Wood three-pointer two minutes later. UWM rallied to tie the game at 39 in the final minute, but a Scottie Wilson free throw gave Wright State a one-point lead at the half.
The second half featured five ties until another Wilson foul shot made it 50-49 with 11:49 to play. The Panthers, however, followed with seven straight points, capped off by a Nick Hansen three, to go in front to stay and another three, this time by Ricky Franklin, put UWM ahead 59-52.
Wright State stayed closed and cut the deficit to three on two different occasions, but a desperation three by Avery Smith as the shot clock expired extended the margin to 68-62 with 40 seconds left.
The Raiders still had a chance as a Drew Burleson three at the 18.2-second mark made it 70-67, but the Panthers sealed the win by hitting three of four foul shots the rest of the way, including two from Hansen with two seconds remaining.
Wright State shot 68 percent from the field in the first half, but hit for just 30 percent the final 20 minutes while Milwaukee was at 50 percent in the first half and 38 percent in the second to finish at 45 percent overall.
The Raiders led in rebounds (34-33), points in the paint (32-28) and fast-break points (16-2), but the Panthers had the edge in second-chance points (18-9) and went 17 of 27 at the line, 15 of 24 in the second half, compared to 15 of 21 overall for Wright State.
Wood posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds for WSU and Burleson added 13 points and seven boards. Brown had nine and Jordan Pleiman and Vaughn Duggins each chipped in seven.
