Men Win 65-54 at Green Bay

The Wright State men's basketball team turned in another solid defensive performance Monday night, holding Green Bay to 36 percent shooting in defeating the Phoenix 65-54 in Horizon League action at the Resch Center.

Green Bay scored the first five points of the contest, but the Raiders followed by scoring 16 of the next 18 points over a seven-minute span, with the final seven coming on two Jordan Pleiman foul shots along with a three and jumper by Drew Burleson.

The Phoenix tied the game at 16 as Ryan Evanochko hit two free throws at the 5:54 mark, only to see Wright State go back in front on a Todd Brown three and a Pleiman putback. Green Bay drew to within two before a DaShaun Wood jumper in the final minute made it 25-21 at the half.

Neither team shot well in the first half as WSU was at 32 percent compared to 27 percent for UWGB. Both, however, had better numbers from three-point range as the Raiders were five of 12 for 42 percent and the Phoenix was three of seven for 43 percent.

The margin was two after a Josh Lawrence jumper with 18:49 left, but Wright State used a 11-2 run over the next four minutes to extend its lead to 38-27. Green Bay could get no closer than seven the rest of the way as the Raiders led by as much as 14 in the final seconds.

It was Wright State's first win in Green Bay since a 71-70 decision on February 17, 2002.

Both squads shot better the final 20 minutes as WSU hit for 42 percent to end up at 37 percent overall while Green Bay shot 44 percent to finish the night at 36 percent. The Raiders also made 17 of 20 foul shots in the second half compared to 11 of 12 for the Phoenix.

Wright State controlled the boards 37-28, including a 15-8 edge on the offensive end, which resulted in an 18-4 differential in second-chance points. The Raiders also forced 12 turnovers while committing just nine, which turned into a 13-6 margin in points off of turnovers.

Wood led all scorers with 23, 16 coming in the second half, and moved into fourth place on the Raider all-time scoring list with 1641 points. He also added six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Brown chipped in 17 for Wright State, 11 coming after halftime, while Burleson had 10 points along with eight rebounds.

Mike Schachtner paced Green Bay (12-10, 4-5 Horizon) with 14 points while Lawrence had 13 and Evanochko 12.

Wright State, now 15-8 overall and 8-2 in the Horizon League, wraps up the three-game road swing Saturday afternoon at 4:00 at Detroit. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
