The Wright State men's basketball team hit 13 of its first 17 shots and posted its highest point total of the season as the Raiders rolled to a 76-62 win over the UIC Flames in a battle of Horizon League unbeatens at the Nutter Center Thursday night.
After missing their first two shots of the contest, the Raiders made eight straight, including two three-pointers and a layup from Drew Burleson, to take a 21-8 lead at the 11:47 mark of the first half. WSU gradually built on the advantage from there and led by as much as 22 before going into the half up 41-21.
Wright State shot 53 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 33 percent for UIC.
Five straight Burleson points gave the Raiders their biggest margin of the night at 58-33 with 10 minutes to play and WSU was still up 72-50 before the Flames closed out the contest with a 12-4 run over the final 2:54.
Wright State continued its hot shooting in the second half, hitting for 57 percent to end the night at 55 percent overall, while UIC shot 40 percent for the game after hitting for 48 percent the final 20 minutes.
The Raiders outrebounded the taller Flames 36-23 and outscored UIC in the paint 38-20 and 10-2 in fast-break points.
All five WSU starters scored nine or more points, led by Jordan Pleiman's season highs of 20 points on seven-of-10 shooting and 12 rebounds. Burleson hit six of nine shots, including all three from behind the arc, to finish with a season-best 18 points, while DaShaun Wood had 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Todd Brown added 12 and Vaughn Duggins chipped in nine along with four assists.
Othyus Jeffers paced UIC (7-9, 2-1 Horizon) with 19 points, 12 in the second half, while T.J. Gray had 14 and Robert Bush 11 off the bench.
Wright State, now 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League, looks to extend its winning streak to five Saturday as the Raiders take on #13 Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse in a matchup of the two remaining unbeatens in League play. Game time is 2:00.
