Box Score A buzz-beating three by Todd Brown capped off one of the biggest comebacks in Wright State history Saturday night as the Raiders, down 16 at the half, rallied to pull out a 58-57 win over the Miami RedHawks at the Nutter Center.
Wright State trailed for most of the first half, but trimmed the deficit to 24-23 on a Troy Tabler three with 7:31 remaining. Miami, however, followed with an 18-3 run, five coming from Michael Bramos and four by Tim Pollitz to open up a 42-26 advantage, a lead they maintained at the half at 44-28.
The RedHawks scorched the nets for 74 percent in the first half, hitting 17 of 23 shots overall and six of nine from three-point range, while the Raiders were at 40 percent from the floor.
The margin was still 50-37 after a Alex Moosmann three at the 14:06 mark of the second half, but WSU began its comeback there by scoring seven straight points, including a Tabler three.
Pollitz broke that string with a three-point play, only to see the Raiders make it 53-51 on a Cooper Land triple, a Jordan Pleiman basket and a John David Gardner layup with 5:03 left. It was still a two-point contest until Vaughn Duggins tied the game at 55 with a pair of free throws at the 1:47 mark.
Miami looked to be in good shape as Kenny Hayes nailed a jumper just inside the lane with five seconds left to give the RedHawks the lead back at 57-55, but the Raiders still had one more chance as Duggins took the inbounds pass, dribble across midcourt and found Brown in the right corner for the game-winning three and Wright State's lone lead of the night.
The win marked the second straight year that the Raiders defeated Miami on a last-second shot as a DaShaun Wood jumper with 0.2 seconds left gave Wright State a 57-56 win on November 11, 2006, at Millett Hall in Brad Brownell's debut as Raider head coach.
After shooting 74 percent in the first half, Miami hit just five of 21 shots the final 20 minutes for 24 percent to finish at 50 percent overall while Wright State shot 48 percent in the second half to end up at 44 percent for the game.
WSU hit just 11 of 21 foul shots compared to six of eight for the RedHawks, but the Raiders made their final four attempts. Wright State led in points in the paint (28-18), points off of turnovers (11-5), second-chance points (9-4) and bench scoring (23-16).
Tabler led the way for the Raiders with 14 off the bench while Pleiman added 13 ponts and six rebounds. Brown had eight points and six boards, Duggins eight points, six rebounds and six assists and Land eight points off the bench.
Pollitz paced Miami (4-4) with 15 points while Moosmann and Bramos each had nine and Hayes eight.
Wright State, now 4-3 on the season, wraps up the five-game homestand on Tuesday, December 18, with a 7:00 contest against St. Bonaventure.
