Late Rally Propels Baseball to a 7-6 Victory Over Toledo

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to defeat Toledo 7-6 at Nischwitz Stadium on Wednesday evening. Brian Shoup each homered and nine different Raiders collected hits in the victory.

The Raiders jumped on top in the first inning as Oeder was hit by a pitch to start the game. Oeder stole his 23rd base of the season and scored on a single off the bat of Dan Biedenharn. Biedenharn extended his hitting streak to 15 games with the single and pushed WSU to a 1-0 lead.

The Rockets opened their scoring in the third inning on WSU starter Ross Vagedes. A leadoff single by Josh Colliver, followed by a stolen base and a one out walk to Tim Krofcheck set the table. Drew Hoisington then smacked his 11th home run of the season to push UT to a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, the Raiders tied the game up on UT starter Mike Ellis on one swing of the bat from Shoup. Justin Parker started the inning with a chopper over the third baseman's head and Shoup stepped to the plate. Shoup delivered with his sixth home run of the season deep to right field to knot the game at three runs apiece.

The Rockets retook the lead with three runs in the fifth inning, ending the day for Vagedes. Vagedes walked the leadoff batter and after retiring the next two batters he was replaced by Greg Robinson. Toledo posted four straight singles and scored three runs to push their lead to 6-3.

Vagedes ended the day with 4.2 innings of work, allowing four runs on seven hits. Vagedes struck out three batters in the no decision.

The Raiders roared back in the seventh inning as they chased the second Toledo pitcher of the evening in reliever Todd Thomas. The inning started with singles from Gerald Ogrinc, pinch-hitter Stephen Marquez and an RBI single from Sam Mote. Oeder then stepped to the plate and gave the Green and Gold the lead with his eighth home run of season. The three-run homer is the third in two games for Oeder and pushed WSU back into the lead at 7-6.

Robinson was relieved by Jason Bennion to start the eighth inning. Robinson threw 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two batters to pick up his first win of his WSU career.

Bennion threw two scoreless innings and allowed only one hit to the Rockets. He struck out the final two batters of the game to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Oeder drove in three RBI's and scored two runs in the contest, going one-for-two with a pair of hit-by-pitch. Shoup tallied a pair of RBI's, while Mote and Biedenharn chipped in RBI's in the contest. Nine Raiders collected one hit in the contest as WSU came from behind in their second-straight home contest.

Wright State improves to 29-18 overall on the season and has won two straight games heading into a weekend series with Cleveland State. The Raiders and the Vikings will take to the field on Friday, May 11 at 6:00 in the series opener at Pipe Yard Stadium in Lorain, Ohio.
