Box Score Wright State gave up its fewest points ever in the 39-year history of the program Tuesday night as the Raiders pulled away in the second half to defeat Toledo 50-35 at the Nutter Center.
The Rockets went up 7-6 on a Jonathan Amos layup with 11:12 to go in the first half, but that turned out to be only lead Toledo would have the entire night as WSU scored the next five points. Toledo closed to within one on a Ridley Johnson three, only to see the Raiders responded with six straight on baskets from Ronnie Thomas, John David Gardner and N'Gai Evans.
Wright State again led by seven at 20-13 on a three-point play by Will Graham before an Anthony Byrd three cut the margin to 20-16 at the break.
Toledo shot 22 percent from the field overall in the first half, including three of nine from three-point range, while the Raiders were at 32 percent. Despite the Rockets holding a 23-18 rebounding edge, Wright State had a 9-0 differential in second-chance points and 12-6 in points in the paint.
A 7-0 burst over a 1:13 span, capped off by a Gardner three, extended the WSU lead to 29-18 at the 16:17 mark of the second half and the Raiders maintained at least an eight-point cushion from there until breaking open the contest with eight unanswered points, half of those coming from Will Graham, to go up 47-31 with 2:02 remaining.
Previous to Tuesday, the fewest points WSU had given up in a game was 37 on two occasions. The Raiders allowed that total against Ohio Northern at Kenyon on December 27, 1974 and versus Detroit in the first round of last year's Horizon League Tournament at the Nutter Center on March 4, 2008.
WSU shot 44 percent from the floor the final 20 minutes to end up at 38 percent overall while Toledo hit for 29 percent on the night. The Raiders also led in points in the paint (30-22), second-chance points (13-2) and points off of turnovers (27-14) as they forced 26 miscues while committing 16.
Gardner led all scorers with 12 for Wright State while Graham added nine along with five steals. Ronnie Thomas chipped in seven points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Amos paced Toledo (2-7) with nine points while Johnson had eight off the bench.
