Box Score It was opening day across the nation for Division I baseball teams and the Wright State baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision at Arkansas. The Raiders opened the game with a four-run first inning, but UA used nine unanswered runs to claim the victory.
It started well for WSU as they pushed the first runs of the season across the plate in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. R.J. Gundolff led off with a single to center field, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Adams and scored on a Casey McGrew used a sacrifice fly to plate the second run and Ross Vagedes collected his first extra-base hit since April 15, 2005 to push two more runs across the plate.
Michael Woytek took the mound for the first start of his career in front of a paid attendance of 6487 at Baum Stadium and hit the first batter he faced. The rookie then posted a strike out and coaxed a pair of fly ball outs to escape the first inning unscathed.
Arkansas plated a pair of runs on a two-out triple by Chase Leavitt into the gap in right center field to cut the WSU lead to 4-2.
The Razorbacks took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning on a two-out, three run home run off the bat of Andrew Wilkins. Woytek recorded the final out of the inning and ended his day after four innings of work.
The rookie struck out a pair of Arkansas batters, walked three and allowed five earned runs. He allowed six hits and fell to 0-1 on the season.
In the sixth inning, three Wright State pitchers combined to hit a batter, walked three and surrender two singles as Arkansas plated four runs.
With the UA lead at 9-4, Jordan Wolfe and Lee Valencheck each recorded a scoreless inning of work to close out the game on the mound for WSU.
Dallas Keuchel came on in relief for the Razorbacks and threw 5.1 innings to pick up the victory and help UA improve to 1-0 on the season.
For WSU, Gundolff collected a pair of singles in his first game with the Green and Gold, scoring a run. Adams walked twice in the contest, while Jeff Mercer and Parker each reached base twice and scored a run. Vagedes doubled, singled and drove in a pair of RBI's in his first game in the field since the 2005 season.
The Green and Gold will return to action against Arkansas at 2:05 Dayton time for a nine inning contest. WSU is now 0-1 on the season and will look to win the second game of a season for the fourth straight year.
