Late Inning Rally Dooms Baseball at Arkansas

Box Score

It was déjà vu for the Wright State baseball team on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a 5-4 decision at Arkansas. The Raiders took a 4-1 lead into the fifth inning before UA added four runs off of the WSU bullpen over the next two innings to claim the lead and the game.

The Green and Gold got the scoring started in the third inning with three runs off of Arkansas starting pitcher Shaun Seibert to take a 3-0 lead. The Raiders got things started with a walk to Sam Mote and a fake-bunt, base hit from senior John Kopilchack. R.J. Gundolff singled through the right side of the infield to plate the first run and Justin Parker ripped a double down the left field line for a pair of RBI's.

WSU starting pitcher Bryce DeWeese got into some trouble in the fourth inning as the first batter reached on an error, followed by a single and hit batter to load the bases with no outs. The sophomore lefty coaxed a groundball double play, allowing an unearned run, and struck out the final batter of the inning, holding WSU's lead at 3-1.

The lead was extended to 4-1 in the fifth inning when Gundolff reached on a dropped fly ball and advanced to third on the same play after a throwing error. Mercer then used an infield single to push Gundolff across the plate for his first RBI in a Wright State uniform.

The Razorbacks scored their second unearned run of the day when Casey Koon sent a fly ball into left field that was dropped by Brian Adams. One run scored on the dropped fly ball and UA added another run on an RBI single from Andrew Wilkins. Right fielder Ross Vagedes threw out the runner attempting to score from second base to keep WSU ahead 4-3 after five innings.

DeWeese's day ended after allowing three unearned runs in five innings of work. He struck out four batters in his first start with the Raiders and garnered a no decision.

Greg Robinson came on in the sixth inning for WSU and allowed a single and a two run home run to surrender the lead. Robinson worked his way out of the inning and WSU trailed 5-4 heading into the seventh.

WSU threatened in the eighth when Jeff Mercer reached base on a hit by pitch to start the inning and advanced to third on a fielders choice. The Raiders couldn't push the tying run across the plate, heading into their final at bat trailing 5-4.

Robinson, who surrendered two earned runs in two innings of work, gave way to Ryan Portwood in the eighth inning. The rookie pitched a perfect eighth inning to hold the Razorbacks to a one-run lead.

WSU couldn't push the tying run across the plate in the top of the ninth inning as UA reliever Travis Hill recorded his first save of the season. The Green and Gold are now 0-2 overall on the season.

In the game, Robinson was settled with the loss and falls to 0-1 overall this season. At the plate, Gundolff scored a pair of runs, reached base twice and scored a pair of runs, while Mercer singled and was hit by a pitch. Parker drove in a pair of RBI's in the contest and Sam Mote drew a pair of walks.

The Raiders will close out their season on Sunday afternoon against the Razorbacks at 1:05 Dayton time. WSU will look to claim their first win of 2008 as freshman right handed pitcher Michael Meintel will get the start on the mound for WSU.
