Baseball Drops Seesaw Battle at Washington State

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team dropped a back-and-fourth contest at Washington State on Saturday afternoon, falling 14-10. WSU had five players collect two-or-more hits and four players drive in multiple RBI's in the loss at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Washington State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBI singles from Jim Murphy and Matt Argyropoulos.

WSU would score the next five runs of the game to take a 5-2 lead. In the second inning, Aaron Field drove in Gerald Ogrinc from second with a single up the middle. The Green and Gold would tally four runs in the third inning as Jeff Mercer and Ogrinc would each collect a pair of RBI's in the inning.

The Cougars would tally a run in the third inning off of Wright State starter Bryce DeWeese. Then in the fourth, DeWeese would surrender a pair of solo home runs before handing the ball to Greg Robinson with a pair of runners on base. The inning ended as Robinson struck out a batter and Ogrinc threw out a base runner attempting to steal to keep the game knotted at five runs apiece.

DeWeese threw 3.1 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits. He struck out one batter and walked four in his second start of the season.

After taking the lead in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Field's, the back and fourth between the two teams continued. Washington State tallied a pair of runs in their half of the inning to take a 7-6 lead.

Robinson ended his day in the sixth after allowing a two-run blast to Murphy with no one out. The home run extended the Cougars lead to 9-6 and Scott Ruthven entered the game to relieve the right-hander. In the game, Robinson threw 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Ogrinc added to his RBI total in the seventh inning with a two-run home run over the 20-foot batters eye in center field. The sophomore sent the ball 435 feet to dead center field to pull the Green and Gold within one run at 9-8.

Washington State extended their lead to 13-8 with one run in the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth.

Vagedes pulled Wright State closer in the ninth as Mercer walked to start the inning, before Vagedes stepped in. The senior sent the offering from Matt Corwe 395 feet over the right-center field fence for his first longball of the season.

In the game, Ross Vagedes collected three hits and scored four runs in the game while Mercer drove in two RBI's. Ogrinc was four-for-five at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI's. Casey McGrew, R.J. Gundolff and Fields all collected two hits, with Fields recording a pair of RBI's. Wright State collected 15 hits and didn't commit an error in the game as they dropped their fifth straight contest to open the season. The ten runs and 15 hits are both season-highs for the Raiders in 2008.

It is the first time since March 30, 2005 that Wright State lost a game in which it scored ten runs or more. The Green and Gold had won 29-straight games that they had scored more then ten runs coming into this season.

The Raiders fall to 0-5 this season and will close out their series at Washington State on Sunday, March 2 at 3:00 Dayton time.
