Box Score The Wright State baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision at #23 Louisville on Wednesday afternoon. The Green and Gold took an early 3-0 lead, but U of L responded with four runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to capture the victory.
The Raiders capitalized on a Louisville error in the second inning and take an early 2-0 lead. The first run was set up after Jeff Mercer doubled and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Gerald Ogrinc then hit a fly ball to right field, which was dropped, allowing Mercer to score and leaving Ogrinc at third base. Kris Steffen then grounded out to second base, plating Ogrinc and giving WSU an early advantage.
Then in the third inning, R.J. Gundolff smacked his second home run of the season down the left field line, giving WSU a 3-0 lead.
Wright State starter Rylan Ostrosky threw two innings allowing only a single and struck out two batters. Ostrosky handed the ball to Alex Kaminsky to start the third inning with a 3-0 lead.
Kaminsky would find trouble in the third inning as he surrendered four runs on four hits in only one-third of an inning. Rookie Lee Valenckeck would come on to retire the next two batters in the inning and hold U of L to a 4-3 lead.
Louisville added two runs off of Valencheck in the fourth inning to push their lead to 6-3.
WSU would add a run in the sixth and eighth innings on RBI singles from Ogrinc and Mercer to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Cardinals would tack on an unearned run in the eighth inning to account for the final margin of 7-5.
Three other Raiders pitchers would combined to allow one unearned run in four innings of work. Jordan Wolfe threw two scoreless innings, Greg Robinson didn't allow a run in one inning of work and Ryan Portwood allowed one unearned run in an inning.
At the plate, Mercer extended his hitting streak to ten games with a three-for-four day at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Jeremy Hamilton reached base twice in the contest and Gundolff added a walk to his home run at U of L.
The Raiders are now 1-9 overall and will open their home schedule on Friday, March 14, against Valparaiso starting at 4:00.
