Box Score The Wright State baseball team dropped the series finale to UIC on Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. The Green and Gold outhit the visiting Flames 9-7, but UIC tallied two unearned runs to claim the series from the Raiders.
UIC tallied three runs in the third inning to stake to an early lead on WSU starter Michael Woytek. Two of the three runs were unearned in the inning the Raiders committed an error in the frame.
Woytek threw four innings in the start and surrendered three runs, one earned, walked three and struck out three in the loss. The rookie is now 1-3 overall on the mound and owns a 7.71 ERA in six starts.
Wright State got on the board in the sixth inning when R.J. Gundolff doubled to start the inning. After moving to third on an Aaron Field ground out, Gundolff crossed the plate when Jeremy Hamilton lifted a sacrifice fly into center field.
Casey McGrew reached base on a dropped fly ball by the UIC left fielder to start the seventh inning and last scored on an RBI single from Gerald Ogrinc, cutting the UIC lead to 3-2.
UIC extended its lead in the eighth inning as they started the inning with a pair of base hits off of WSU relief pitcher Michael Meintel. A sacrifice fly and a squeeze play scored the two runs providing for a 5-2 margin in favor of the Flames.
The Flames would add the final run of the game in the ninth inning off of WSU reliever Greg Robinson to end the scoring in their favor at 6-2.
Leading the way for WSU was Ogrinc with a three-for-four day at the plate with an RBI. Gundolff collected a pair of hits, including a double, and scored a run, while Hamilton drove in an RBI in the seventh of his last eight games.
The Raiders are now 7-13 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League after falling to the Flames on Sunday. The next action for the Green and Gold will be on Tuesday, April 1 when they travel to Xavier for a 3:00 first pitch.
