Baseball Falls on Late Home Runs to UNC Asheville

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team dropped a 2-0 decision to UNC Asheville in the opening game of the 2008 Citadel Shootout on Saturday afternoon. The Green and Gold outhit the Bulldogs 6-4, but were shutout for the first time in 80 games dating back to the 2006 season.

WSU got a solid five and two-thirds innings from freshman Michael Woytek against the Bulldogs. The rookie allowed only a pair of singles and struck out two in the no decision.

The Raiders would strand a base runner in each of the first five innings, including leaving two runners aboard in the fourth inning.

Scott Ruthven would take the loss for Wright State as he allowed a pair of solo home runs in one and one-thirds innings of work. Ruthven falls to 0-1 on the season as he struck out two batters in the appearance.

WSU would have a base runner in each of the final two innings, but couldn't push a run across the plate. It is the first time since a 7-0 defeat at the hands of UIC on May 20, 2006 that a Wright State team has failed to score a run.

In the contest, Vagedes was the only WSU player to reach base more than once with a pair of singles. R.J. Gundolff and Aaron Fields each doubled in the contest, while Jeremy Hamilton and Jeff Mercer rounded out the hitting for the Green and Gold.

The Raiders fall to 0-7 on the season and will play their second game of the Citadel Shootout at 4:00 on Saturday, March 8. WSU will take on The Citadel in their second game of the day.
