Baseball Captures First Win Over Evansville, 13-3

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team collected their first win of the 2008 season in convincing fashion over Evansville. The Raiders belted out nine extra base hits on their way to a 13-3 win on Sunday afternoon at the 2008 Citadel Shootout.

Evansville started the scoring in the first inning with a pair of runs off of WSU starter Michael Meintel to take their only lead of the contest at 2-0.

Wright State would respond in the second inning as Ross Vagedes got the scoring started with his third home run of the season to left field. R.J. Gundolff capped the second inning with a two-run home run to left field to push WSU ahead 4-2.

Meintel would surrender a run in the third inning before holding the Purple Aces scoreless in his final two innings of work. The rookie threw five innings for the third consecutive start and allowed three runs on six hits. He walked only one batter and struck out three to improve to 1-1 on the season.

WSU added a run in the third and fourth innings on RBI's from Vagedes and Aaron Fields to extend their lead to 6-3.

In the seventh, the big inning fell the Raiders way. Wright State sent thirteen batters to the plate in the inning and seven different players crossed the plate. Fields and Vagedes each drove in a pair of RBI's and reached base twice in the inning.

Rylan Ostrosky struck out three batters in two innings of relief work, while Greg Robinson and Ryan Portwood each threw an inning and fanned a pair of UE hitters.

Jeff Mercer extended his hitting streak to nine games with a one-for-four day at the plate and Vagedes kept his five game streak alive with a trio of hits. Vagedes added a pair of runs scored and four RBI's, while Fields drove in three runs and Gundolff collected a pair of RBI's.

The victory was the 999th victory in Wright State baseball history and gives WSU a 1-8 record on the season. The next game for the Raiders will come on Tuesday, March 11 as they travel to Miami for a single game at 3:00.
