Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team won a pair of one-run games at Butler on Saturday afternoon. The Green and Gold posted a 5-4 comeback victory in game one and held on to post a 4-3 victory in the series finale at Bulldog Park.
In game one, the Raiders took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Gerald Ogrinc singled to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt from Ross Vagedes, John Kopilchack delivered the RBI single to push WSU to a 1-0 lead.
Butler would respond with the next four runs in the contest, scoring two in the second, one in the fifth and one in the sixth off of WSU starter Michael Woytek.
Woytek threw six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts before handing the ball to Alex Kaminsky in the seventh. Kaminsky surrendered one hit and struck out two while tossing a pair of shutout innings.
Gerald Ogrinc hit a sacrifice fly to start the comeback and cut the BU lead to 4-3.
After an intentional walk to Ross Vagedes, Kopilchack delivered in the clutch with a two-RBI triple to center field to push WSU ahead 5-4.
Greg Robinson came on to thrown a perfect ninth inning to collect his second save of the season. Kaminsky picked up the victory to improve to 2-1 and WSU headed into game two with momentum.
Kopilchack drove in three runs in game one, with Mercer and Ogrinc each adding an RBI of their own. Hamilton collected a multi-hit game for the Raiders and walked once in the contest.
In the second game, the Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Butler starting pitcher Jeff Sinkiewicz. In the inning, Mercer and Justin Parker each drove in an RBI to push WSU out to an early lead.
The Raiders added a pair of runs in the third inning as Casey McGrew started off the inning with a double to left center field. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Hamilton scored the first run of the third inning for WSU. Parker singled and then scored on a Mercer base hit into right field. A misplay by the Butler right fielder allowed Parker to score the eventual game winning run.
The Green and Gold led 4-0 and starting pitcher Rylan Ostrosky was throwing well, allowing only four hits in six and two-thirds innings of work. Ostrosky struck out four batters and allowed only an unearned run to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Michael Meintel came on in the seventh and recorded the final out of the inning via strikeout. After throwing a scoreless eighth he got into some trouble in the ninth.
Butler put the first two runners on base against Meintel in the ninth inning and after a sacrifice fly, a walk put the tying run on base. A strikeout gave the Raiders two outs in the ninth, but a Bulldog RBI single cut the deficit to 4-3 with two runners on base. Meintel then induced a ground ball from the final Butler batter of the game. R.J. Gundolff collected the ball and stepped on second to preserve the victory for WSU.
Meintel collected his fourth save of the season, coming on with the bases loaded in the seventh, with two strikesout in two and one-third innings of work.
In game two, all four of the Raider runs came from the top of the batting order. McGrew collected three hits, while Fields and Parker chipped in a pair of hits. Mercer also reached base twice in the contest.
Vagedes collected a hit in each contest to run his hitting streak to nine games, with Hamilton (five games) and Ogrinc (four games) each keeping their hitting streaks in tact against the Bulldogs.
The Green and Gold even their record at 15-15 overall this season and are now 7-4 in Horizon League play. The Raiders will take to the diamond on Tuesday, April 15 against Xavier at 6:30 under the lights at Nischwitz Stadium.
