Baseball Claims 5-1 Victory Over Xavier in Midweek Tilt

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team raced out to a 5-0 lead on visiting Xavier Tuesday evening at Nischwitz Stadium. The Green and Gold would allow only one run to the Musketeers and claim a 5-1 victory against XU to sweep the season series.

The Raiders got the scoring started in the third inning as Ross Vagedes doubled to start the inning off of Xavier starter Brian Muransky. Vagedes came around to score on a throwing error by the Xavier pitcher on a bunt from John Kopilchack. Casey McGrew smacked a single later in the inning to extend the WSU lead to 2-0.

Alex Kaminsky got the start on the mound for the Raiders and tossed four scoreless innings against the Musketeers. He was perfect through four innings, throwing only 32 pitches, and improve to 3-1 overall on the season.

In the sixth inning, the Green and Gold tacked on three more runs on XU's starting pitcher. With one out in the inning, Jeff Mercer then singled through the left side of the infield to plate the first run of the inning. Vagedes drove in an RBI with a double and Kopilchack collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly to give WSU a 5-0 lead.

Rylan Ostrosky and Jon Durket each allowed one hit and completed scoreless innings on the mound. Greg Robinson tossed two innings, striking out one, and didn't allow a hit.

The Musketeers tallied their run in the ninth inning off of freshman relief pitcher Lee Valencheck. Xavier used a pair of singles to lead off the inning. After the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch, Steve Brown then singled to score the lone run of the contest for XU. Valencheck retired the final three batters of the game, the final two via strikeout, to preserve the 5-1 victory for the Raiders.

In the game, Vagedes collected a pair of doubles for his ninth multi-hit game of the season. Hamilton extended his hitting streak to six games with a first inning single. While Parker chipped in a pair of hits and scored a run in the game.

The Raiders improve to 16-15 overall on the season and will take on crosstown rival Dayton on Wednesday, April 16. WSU will square off with the Flyers at Time Warner Cable Stadium starting at 4:00.
