Baseball Blasts UIC in Twinbill Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team swept a pair of games from UIC on Sunday afternoon at Les Miller Field. The Green and Gold won game one, 20-0, before taking the second game, 6-1, to win their first series at UIC since the 1998 season.

In game one, Jeremy Hamilton drove in the first RBI of the contest with a double in the first inning. That inning, Jeff Mercer blasted a three-run home run and John Kopilchack drove in an RBI to give WSU an early 6-0 lead.

Kopilchack would drive in an RBI in the third and fourth inning, while Mercer and Ross Vagedes would add an RBI a piece in the fourth to push WSU ahead, 10-0.

A five-run sixth inning, a run in the seventh and four runs in the ninth would cap the scoring for the Green and Gold.

Jon Durket tossed a complete game against the Flames, allowing only five hits, and posted the first shutout of the season for WSU. The junior fanned eight and walked only two batters to improve to 2-2 overall on the season.

It was the 20th time in school history the WSU posted twenty or more runs in a game and only the third in that the Raiders have accomplished the feat in Horizon League play.

All nine WSU starters collected hits in game one and 11 players posted hits overall. Ten players drove in RBI's and 12 players scored runs in the contest. Casey McGrew scored a pair of runs and collected three hits, while Mercer drove in four, scored a pair of runs and collected a pair of hits. Hamilton doubled twice and drove in three RBI's as well for the Raiders.

In game two, WSU tallied the first run in the opening frame off of UIC starting pitcher Mike Kool. Justin Parker singled to center field, scoring McGrew from second to push the Raiders ahead, 1-0.

An RBI single from Hamilton pushed Wright State ahead, 2-0, but UIC would add their first run of the contest in the fourth inning.

With the game sitting at 2-1 in favor of WSU, Raiders starting pitcher Alex Kaminsky would retire nine of the next twelve batters before handing the ball to Scott Ruthven to close out the game.

The Green and Gold added four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a Kopilchack opposite field, two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field.

Kaminsky would toss seven innings and allow one run on three hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three to improve to 4-1 overall in 2008. Scott Ruthven tossed the final two innings scoreless, not allowing a hit, and struck out one batter.

Parker would post a four-for-four day at the plate in game two and drove in an RBI to become the 21st member of the 100 run-100 RBI club at WSU. Kopilchack and Hamilton each drove in a pair of RBI's and McGrew scored three runs in the game.

The Raiders end the weekend with an eight-game winning streak in Horizon League play, the second longest in school history.

With the twinbill sweep, Wright State improves to 18-16 overall and their 9-4 mark in the Horizon League give them the top spot in the rankings. The next game for the Green and Gold will be on Tuesday, April 22, at Toledo, game time scheduled for 3:00.
