Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team took a twinbill from Milwaukee to move into a first place tie in the Horizon League, winning game one 8-2 and taking the nightcap, 19-11. The Raiders collected 33 hits and scored 27 runs to win their fourth straight Horizon League series.
The Green and Gold got out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings on UWM starting pitcher Brad Lusti. In the first inning, R.J. Gundolff and Jeremy Hamilton reached base and Justin Parker smacked a deep drive into center field. The ball careened off the wall and Parker came all the way around for the inside the park home run.
Then, with two outs in the second inning, Aaron Field singled to get things started for WSU. Casey McGrew then sent an offering 435 feet to straight away center field for his second homer of the season.
With WSU leading 5-0, the Panthers would stick a pair of runs on Wright State starter Jon Durket in the third inning. The two-run home run from Nick Wichser cut the WSU lead to 5-2.
The Raiders would add runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to account for the final margin of 8-2. Fields collected an RBI and Jeff Mercer drove in two for the Raiders to cap the scoring.
Durket threw his second straight complete game in the first contest, allowing just two runs on eight hits. He didn't walk a batter and fanned six to improve to 3-2 overall on the season.
In the first contest, Parker would drive in three RBI's and score a pair of runs, while Field posted a perfect three-for-three day at the plate. Mercer drove in a pair of RBI's and Gundolff scored a pair of runs. All nine Raiders would collect a hit in the game one against the Panthers.
In game two, the offense came alive as the two teams combined for 30 runs and 35 hits. The Raiders, however, would amass 19 runs on twenty hits and record 17 RBI's to claim the double-header sweep, 19-11.
After Milwaukee tallied four runs in the first inning, Brian Shoup smacked on against Urbana during the 2006 season.
The Raiders would add six runs in the third inning to take control of the contest, with eight Raiders collecting hits and six players driving in RBI's in the frame.
WSU scored three runs in the fifth inning, two on a double from Gundolff, and a pair of runs in the sixth inning on a Ross Vagedes homer.
The Raiders would score a pair of runs in the seventh and cap the game in the eighth with a two-run homer from Hamilton and an RBI double from Mercer.
Alex Kaminsky would throw six and two-thirds innings and allow all eleven runs - only seven earned - on 12 hits. The sophomore would walk two batters in the contest and improve to 5-1 overall in 2008.
In the second game, seven WSU players collected multiple hits in the contest and five Raiders would drive in three RBI's. Hamilton, Parker and Vagedes each homered, as WSU pounded out eight extra-base hits.
The Raiders improve to 21-17 overall this season and are tied for first place in the Horizon League with an 11-5 record. The Green and Gold will next be in action on Wednesday, April 30, against Dayton at Nischwitz Stadium on Military Appreciation Night.
