Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team dropped the opening game of the series at Cleveland State, falling 6-5, but rallied for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap at Pipe Yard Stadium. The Raiders rallied in game one, but fell short, and then took the lead from the beginning in the second game.
In game one, WSU fell behind early as CSU plated a pair of runs in the first inning off of WSU starting pitcher Rylan Ostrosky.
WSU answered with two runs of their own in the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles from R.J. Gundolff and Justin Parker.
With game one tied at 2-2, Cleveland State tallied four runs in the inning off of an RBI single and a pair of home runs.
The Raiders would add a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Parker and then a run in the sixth on an RBI double from Ross Vagedes.
The Vikings headed into the ninth inning with a 6-4 lead, but WSU would use a leadoff walk and an RBI single to close the gap to 6-5. With two outs in the inning, the game tying run reached second base, but CSU closer Vasili Pahoulis closed out the inning for his third save.
Ostrosky surrendered all six runs in two and one-thirds innings of work and fell to 0-2 on the season. Scott Ruthven threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief and Alex Kaminsky struck out one in two scoreless innings to close out game one.
In game two, the Green and Gold opened the game with a three run first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Casey McGrew singled in an RBI and Jeff Mercer ripped a double to plate a pair of runs in the first frame.
After a Kyle Bischoff home run, the Green and Gold then added a pair of runs in the eighth inning on a Mercer two-RBI single to push their lead to 5-1.
WSU starter Jon Durket threw seven and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs - three earned - as he surrendered three runs in the CSU eighth. Greg Robinson came on with two outs in the eighth inning and struck out the final batter of the inning.
In the ninth, the Raiders were held scoreless, before Robinson closed the door for his first save of the season. Durket picked up the first victory of his career in his second start of the season.
Jeremy Hamilton recorded a hit in each contest to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, while Parker pushed his streak to ten games. Mercer drove in four RBI's on the day and five other Raiders each collected an RBI.
Wright State pushes its record to 10-14 overall and now holds a 3-4 mark in the Horizon League. The Raiders and Vikings will close out their series with a single game on Sunday, April 6, starting at Noon.
