Box Score The Wright State baseball team got eight innings out of starting pitcher Michael Woytek in a 3-2 victory over Cleveland State at Pipe Yard Stadium on Sunday. The Green and Gold were outhit in the contest, but capitalized on a Vikings error to win their first Horizon League series of the season.
The Green and Gold got the scoring started with two runs on back-to-back RBI doubles from Jeff Mercer and Casey McGrew. Justin Parker singled with two outs to get things started against CSU starting pitcher Sam Suitca, before scoring on the Mercer double.
The Raiders would add an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning as Mercer got the inning started with a two-out walk. McGrew sent the next offering from Suitca deep into right field, where the ball was dropped, allowing Mercer to score from first and push WSU ahead 3-0.
With WSU leading 3-0, Woytek tossed the first five innings scoreless, before surrendering single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to allow CSU to cut the lead to 3-2.
Woytek worked a perfect eighth inning before handing the ball to freshman Michael Meintel in the ninth. Meintel retired the first two batters he faced, before loading the bases on a pair of hits and a hit batsman. With pinch hitter Matt Madrid at the plate, Meintel struck him out looking to end the game and preserve his third save of the season.
Woytek improved to 2-3 overall and recorded the longest outing of the season for a WSU pitcher with eight innings. He struck out a career-high four batters and allowed five hits in the victory.
R.J. Gundolff collected his seventh multi-hit game of the season with a double and a single in the contest. Mercer scored a run and ripped his ninth double of 2008 in the contest, while Parker extended his hitting streak to 11-games in the finale.
The Raiders improve to 11-14 overall on the season and sit at 4-4 overall in the Horizon League. WSU will next be in action on Tuesday, April 8, against Urbana starting at 6:30 under the lights at Nischwitz Stadium.
