Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team used a solid outing from Jon Durket to win game one, 4-2, and then tallied an 11-6 victory in the nightcap against Cleveland State on Saturday. The Raiders closed out their Horizon League slate with the doubleheader sweep of CSU and won their final seven series in league play.
The Green and Gold got on the board early in game one as Aaron Fields singled and Jeremy Hamilton walked to put two runners on and only one out in the inning. After a balk by CSU starting pitcher Josh Hungerman, Justin Parker chipped a single down the right field line to score both runners and give WSU a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings tied things up in the top of the sixth inning as Kyle Bischoff smack a two-run home run off of Wright State starting pitcher Jon Durket.
With the score knotted at 2-2, the Raiders opened up the bottom half of the sixth inning with back-to-back hit batsmen. Hamilton was plunked to start the inning and Parker was hit by a 3-2 offering from Hungerman. After a Jeff Mercer sacrifice bunt, senior Ross Vagedes used a sacrifice fly to plate Hamilton and give WSU a 3-2 lead.
With CSU threatening in the seventh inning, Wright State relief pitcher Scott Ruthven came on to record the final out of the inning and preserve the lead. The out was made with runners on second and third as Sam Mote made a diving snag on the line and threw out the runner at first.
Durket threw 6.2 innings in the start and allowed two runs on seven hits in the outing. The junior walked two and struck out six to improve to 5-2 overall on the season.
The Raiders added their final run of the game in the eighth inning as Parker started the frame with his 50th career double. After a sacrifice bunt by Mercer, Ogrinc grounded into a fielder choice to score Parker, giving WSU a 4-2 lead.
Ruthven retired the final seven batters of the game - not allowing a hit - and striking out five batters. The senior posted his second save of the season with 2.1 innings of shutout relief.
In game one, Parker was two-for-three with a run scored and two RBI's and Fields chipped in a pair of hits in the contest. Ogrinc and Vagedes each drove in RBI's and Hamilton scored a pair of runs in the opener.
Cleveland State opened game two with a run in the first inning, but WSU benefitted from a pair of walks and a pair of hit batsmen in their half of the inning. The Raiders collected RBI's from Mercer and Vagedes in the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Mote and Parker each drove in RBI's in the second inning and John Kopilchack smacked his tenth home run of the season, a two run shot, to put WSU ahead, 6-1.
Ostrosky was forced to leave the game in the fifth inning with a minor injury and Greg Robinson came on in relief. The Vikings would tack on four runs in the frame and cut the WSU lead to 6-5.
Mote doubled in an RBI and Hamilton drove in two RBI's with a double down the right field line in the Raiders half of the fifth inning. WSU added a pair of runs on an error by the CSU shortstop to take an 11-5 lead.
The Vikings added a lone run in the seventh inning to account for the final margin of 11-6 in favor of the Raiders.
Robinson collected the victory with 3.1 innings of relief work to improve his record to 4-3. The sophomore struck out two and allowed four runs on six hits.
Jordan Wolfe came on in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out, only to record the final two outs of the inning. The sophomore tossed a perfect ninth to collect the first save of his career.
Parker pounded out three hits in the contest, including his 51st career double, and Kopilchack collected a home run and a double in the contest. Mote chipped in a pair of hits in game two, while Hamilton drove in two and scored a pair of runs.
The Raiders improve to 27-19 overall on the season and end the Horizon League slate with a 16-6 record. Wright State will travel down I-75 to face off with Cincinnati on Tuesday, May 13, starting at 6:30.
