Box Score The Wright State baseball team dropped their regular season finale, 7-6, to NJIT on Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. The Green and Gold committed four errors in the contest and were outhit 12-10 in the loss to the Highlanders.
In the first inning, NJIT tallied an unearned run on WSU starting pitcher Jordan Wolfe as the Green and Gold committed two errors in the frame. In the second, Matt Moratta tripled to start the inning and scored on a Julio Lugo ground out to give NJIT a 2-0 lead.
WSU would add a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to knot the game up, one coming on an RBI double from Justin Parker.
In the fourth inning, Gerald Ogrinc reached on a passed ball to start the frame and Kris Steffen singled to put two on with no outs. Senior John Kopilchack would give WSU the lead with his 11th home run of the season, a shot to right field.
Jeremy Hamilton would extend the WSU lead to 6-2 with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. It was the ninth home run of the season for the junior and gives him 48 RBI's on the season.
Michael Woytek would come on to thrown the seventh and eight innings, allowing three runs on three hits in the seventh. A bases loaded double from Moratta would knot the game at 6-6 heading to the ninth.
The second unearned run of the contest came off of senior Scott Ruthven in the ninth and allowed the Highlanders to improve their record 5-43 overall on the season. Moratta drove in the decisive RBI, giving him four in the game, and Rob Petricola tossed the final 5.2 innings to win his first game of the season on the mound.
For WSU, eight of the nine starters collected a hit and Hamilton scored a pair of runs in the contest. John Kopilchack drove in three runs for his tenth multi-RBI game of the season.
The Raiders fall to 29-21 overall and will now head to Niles, Ohio for the Horizon League Tournament presented by the U.S. Army. The Raiders will take to the field on Thursday, May 22, at 3:00 for their first contest in the tournament.
