Baseball Splits Twinbill at Youngstown State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team spilt a Horizon League twinbill at Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon, winning game one, 6-3, before dropping the nightcap, 8-5.

In game one, WSU got the scoring started in the second inning with four runs off of YSU starting pitcher Corey Vukovic. Ross Vagedes started the inning with a triple and Gerald Ogrinc drove in the first run of the contest with a ground out. Casey McGrew collected an RBI in the inning and Jeremy Hamilton drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Vagedes drove in an RBI in the fifth inning, with a sacrifice fly, and Jeff Mercer singled in an RBI in the seventh to give WSU a 6-0 lead.

Jon Durket tossed seven scoreless innings in the start for Wright State. The junior fanned a pair of batters and allowed only six hits. The left-hander allowed only two base runners past second base and benefitted from three double plays to improve to 4-2 on the season.

YSU got all of their offense via the home run, scoring three runs off of WSU relief pitcher Lee Valencheck. Joe Iacobicci hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and C.J. Morris smacked a two-run homer in the ninth.

Senior reliever Scott Ruthven came on to replace Valencheck with one out in the ninth and struck out the final two batters to preserve the WSU victory.

In game one, Aaron Fields joined Hamilton and Mercer with two hits apiece in the game. Hamilton doubled to move into second place on the career list with 51 two-baggers and drove in a pair of RBI's in game one.

Game two started much different for the Raiders as YSU starting pitcher Aaron Swenson retired the first three WSU batters via strikeout in the opening frame. The Penguins followed that with a pair of runs, one unearned, off of WSU starter Michael Woytek.

YSU then tallied a run in the second inning and four runs in the third to end the day for Woytek. The freshman tossed three innings, allowing seven runs - five earned - as he falls to 2-5 overall this season.

WSU got their offense started in the seventh inning as Mercer doubled to start the inning and Vagedes smacked his fifth home run of the season to left field.

The Green and Gold added a pair of runs in the eighth inning to close the gap to 8-4 with RBI's from Hamilton and Kory Twede.

Jordan Wolfe tossed three innings in relief of Woytek and allowed only one run with a strike out in his 12 appearance of the season. Rylan Ostrosky tossed a scoreless seventh and Greg Robinson threw a scoreless eighth to hold the YSU offense at bay.

In the ninth, Sam Mote then delivered an RBI single into center field to cut the YSU advantage to three runs at 8-5. Craig Gillett came on for Youngstown State to nail down his second save of the season to allow the Penguins to hold on.

Mercer doubled twice to give him 19 on the season and move him into a tie for seventh on the single season list. Vagedes and Kyle Mossbarger each chipped in pair of hits, with both players posting a double in game two.

Wright State won the opening two games against the Penguins and have now won five straight Horizon League series.

WSU sits at 24-18 overall and are 13-6 in league play with the double-header split on Sunday. The Raiders will return to the field on Tuesday, May 6, at Kentucky for a 6:30 first pitch.
