Box Score Wright State scored the first nine points of the game and led by as much as 17 in the second half before holding off a late Toledo rally for a 66-56 decision over the Rockets Tuesday night at Savage Arena, giving the Raiders their first win on an opponent's home court this season.
After Vaughn Duggins opened the scoring with a jumper, seven straight points from Todd Brown gave WSU a 9-0 advantage just 3:11 into the game. Wright State later led 15-3 and 28-12 in the first half before going into the break up 32-19.
The Raiders shot just 39 percent from the field in the first half compared to 41 percent for Toledo, but WSU forced the Rockets into 14 turnovers while committing only four and held a 6-1 edge in offensive rebounds, resulting in a 33-17 differential in shot attempts and an 18-0 margin in points off of turnovers.
Brown connected on a three-pointer in the opening minute into the second half to give Wright State its biggest lead of the night at 38-21, but the Rockets responded by outscoring the Raiders 31-19 over the next 15 minutes to cut the deficit to 57-52 with 4:41 remaining.
Toledo closed to within five again on two other occasions before Duggins put the game out of reach by scoring the final five points of the contest, all at the foul line over the last 1:30.
Wright State finished the game at 42 percent compared to 51 percent for the Rockets, but the Raiders hit 16 of 18 foul shots, including 14 of 15 in the second half, to just three of five for Toledo and held a 24-10 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Duggins paced the Raiders with 17 points while Brown had 16 and Cory Cooperwood 14. Jake Barnett led Toledo (2-7) with 13 points.
Wright State (6-2) faces another Mid-American Conference opponent on Sunday as the Raiders head to Millett Hall to face the Miami RedHawks. Tip-off is set for 3:00.
