Baseball Falls 4-0 at Vanderbilt

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team couldn't muster any offense and Vanderbilt staked to an early lead as the Raiders fell 4-0 on Wednesday evening at Hawkins Field. WSU stranded eight runners on base and only four players collected hits in the loss to the Commodores.

VU got on the board in the first inning against WSU starting pitcher Michael Meintel as a leadoff walk came around to score on an RBI single from Curt Casali.

The lead was expanded to 3-0 in the third inning when Vanderbilt used three hits to score a pair of runs, before Meintel was relieved by Jordan Marker with two outs in the frame. Meintel tossed 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits, striking out three and walking two batters.

Marker surrendered a run in the fifth as he tossed 2.1 innings with two hits, no walks and a pair of strikeouts. Travis LaMar, Jordan Wolfe each tossed scoreless innings to close out the game, but WSU was unable to capitalize – including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh inning – as the Commodores held on for the victory.

Jeff Mercer ripped his 11th double of the season in the fourth inning. Kory Twede, Sam Mote and Tristan Moore rounded out the base runners for WSU in the contest.

The Raiders are now 10-13 overall and will return to Horizon League play on Friday, March 27, with a doubleheader versus Butler. The change is schedule is due to the threat of weather in the Dayton area in the coming days. WSU will host the Bulldogs at Nischwitz Stadium at 3:00 on Friday – playing two games – while a single game will be played on Saturday at a time to be announced.
