Quentin Cate delivered three RBI's and Jeff Mercer was on base four times as the Wright State baseball team claimed a 7-3 victory over Miami at the Inaugural Joe Nuxhall Classic hosted by the University of Cincinnati. Jordan Marker earned his first collegiate win in the contest and WSU collected five extra base hits.
The Green and Gold started the scoring in the third inning when Ryan Ashe walked and Jake Hibberd singled with two outs in the frame. Mercer plated the first run with an RBI single, before Cate brought home two runs with a single to left field.
Travis LaMar got the start for Wright State and allowed one run in three innings of work. The junior allowed only two hits, walked two and fanned two during the outing.
The RedHawks tallied single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the Raiders lead to 3-2, but the Raiders would extend their lead in the fifth.
Casey McGrew and Cate each drove in RBI's in the fifth inning – both runs scoring with two outs in the frame – as the Green and Gold pushed their lead to 5-2. Kory Twede drove in the sixth run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to left field after Mercer doubled to start the frame. Miami scored their final run in the seventh on a bases loaded fielder's choice.
WSU would cap the scoring in the eighth when Mercer's ground ball was mishandled by the MU shortstop, allowing a run to scoring and giving the senior his 40th RBI of the season.
Marker tossed three innings and picked up the victory in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Greg Robinson came on and tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, while Michael Schum struck out one and tossed a scoreless ninth.
Cate collected three hits and drove in three RBI's, while Mercer doubled twice, singled and scored three runs to go along with two RBI's. Hibberd scored a run and collected a pair of hits, with McGrew driving in an RBI with a pair of hits in the game. Gerald Ogrinc walked three times and singled in the game.
Wright State is now 16-19 overall and will play the winner of the night game between Cincinnati and Xavier, with the time to be determined at the conclusion of the game. If the Bearcats win, the Raiders will play at 7:00, if the Musketeers are victorious the two teams will square off at 3:00 at Marge Schott Stadium on the UC campus.
