Baseball Takes Game One 7-3 Behind Strong Effort from Woytek

Trailing 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, the Wright State baseball team tallied six unanswered runs to claim a 7-3 victory over UIC in game one at Nischwitz Stadium on Friday afternoon. Kory Twede drove in three RBI's and WSU outhit the Flames 15-6 to claim the win in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Flames Brandon Harwell led the game off with a home run on the second pitch of the contest against Jeff Mercer knotted the game at 1-1, UIC tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth against Woytek to reclaim the lead.

Woytek held the Flames at bay in the top of the sixth and the WSU offense would send nine batters to the plate in their half of the inning, scoring four times, and claim a 5-3 lead. In the inning, Twede doubled in a pair of runs, while back-to-back singles from Aaron Fields and Gerald Ogrinc extended WSU's lead.

Twede added another RBI in the seventh inning with a single off of UIC starting pitcher Adam Worthington, plating Mercer, and Fields added his second RBI of the contest later in the frame to give WSU a 7-3 lead.

Woytek tossed six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts to collect his fourth win of the season. Michael Schum came on and tossed the final three innings for his ninth save of the season. It was his 23rd appearance on the season and the righthander faced ten batters, striking out five to lower his ERA to 1.50.

In the game, Twede was three-for-four at the plate and drove in three RBI's to lead the Raiders. Fields plated a pair of runs with two hits in game one, while Gundolff collected three hits, including a double. Mercer collected three hits to up his average to .377, while scoring twice and adding his 41st RBI of the season.
