The Raiders raced out to an early 8-0 lead against Valparaiso in game one of a twinbill on Sunday at Nischwitz Stadium, before adding to their lead and eventually winning a 16-1 Horizon League tilt. All nine WSU starters collected hits in the contest and 11 different players drove in RBI's in game one versus the Crusaders.
The Green and Gold got on the board in the second inning as they tallied three runs on three hits and benefited from a pair of VU errors. In the frame, Aaron Fields and Kory Twede scored the third run of the frame on a throwing error by the Valparaiso shortstop.
With the score at 3-0, the Raiders added three more runs against Valpo starting pitcher Alex Berry. In the inning, Casey McGrew tripled to deep center field with one out and scored on a Ryan Ashe single. Fields drove in his second RBI of the contest with another single and Twede crossed the plate again, this time on a wild pitch, to push the WSU lead to 6-0.
Twede added to his offensive totals in the fifth inning when he clubbed a 364-ffot home run down the left field line. The home run came after Ashe was hit by a pitch with one out in the frame and pushed WSU to an 8-0 lead.
Rylan Ostrosky got the start on the mound for WSU and tossed 6.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits. The senior struck out four and walked three, improving his overall record to 5-3 on the season. Lee Valencheck tossed the final 2.1 innings of work to preserve the victory or WSU.
Kyle Muhlsteff produced the lone run of the contest for the Crusaders with a sixth inning home run before Gerald Ogrinc singled in Ashe from second base in the seventh to stake to a 9-1 lead.
A seven run eighth was started with back-to-back doubles from Mercer and McGrew plated the first run of the Raiders eighth inning and Ashe singled in the second run for his second RBI of the contest, later in the frame. Sam Mote, Quentin Cate and Tony Scott all plated RBI's in the inning to give the Raiders a 16-1 edge heading into the ninth.
In the game, all nine WSU starters collected hits as the Green and Gold out-hit VU 21-5 in the contest.
