
Baseball Uses Balanced Attack to Top Urbana

The Wright State baseball team claimed a 23-0 victory over Urbana on Tuesday evening at Nischwitz Stadium. Eight different Raiders posted multi-hit games as the Green and Gold scored a season-high 23 runs and belted out a season best 25 hits on their way to their 22nd win of the season.
The Green and Gold tallied three runs in the opening frame, with Jeff Mercer collecting an RBI with a single and Kory Twede collecting a pair of RBI's with a base hit of his own. Mercer drove in the only two runs of the second inning with a two-run home run to right-center field, marking his fourth round-tripper of the season.
The Raiders scored 11 runs on nine hits in the third inning, with Garrett Gray posted two, RBI singles in the inning. Six different players drove in runs in the inning, as WSU led 16-0 after three innings of play.
Travis LaMar tossed three innings in the start to improve to 3-4 overall in 2009. LaMar allowed one hit and struck out two in the outing, before Tyler Newhart took the mound to start the fourth. Newhart tossed two innings with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
WSU added three more runs in the fourth inning on Quentin Cate's three run home run to deep center field. It is the sixth home run of the season for Cate and gave him five RBI's in the contest.
Greg Robinson, Bryce DeWeese and Jordan Wolfe all tossed scoreless innings to close out the game for Wright State. Henn, Robinson and DeWeese each collected one strikeout in the appearances.
Moore and Gundolff each collected RBI's in the seventh and WSU collected a pair of runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.
All nine starters either collected an RBI or scored a run in the game and each of the nine starters reached base safely. Cate posted five RBI's, Mote drove in four and Mercer scored four times and added four RBI's in the contest. Gundolff and Gray each boasted four hits, while Mote paced all WSU players with five hits in the contest.
Wright State improves to 22-22 on the season and enter a pivotal weekend of Horizon League play. The Raiders will head to Chicago to take on the league-leading UIC Flames starting on Friday evening at 8:05 Dayton time.
