Box Score Jeff Mercer drove in the first three runs of the contest for the Wright State baseball team and Quentin Cate extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a single in the contest.
The Raiders, now 28-25 overall, opened the scoring in the first inning as Jeff Mercer would hit a fly ball down the right field line. The ball ricochet off of the wall as the Toledo right fielder crashed into the wall. McGrew scored and Mercer rounded second before a UT fielder could get to the ball and was sent home for an inside the park, two-run home run.
With WSU leading 2-0, starting pitcher Greg Robinson tossed three innings, allowing only one hit, with four strikeouts. Robinson handed the ball to Casey Henn in the fourth and the rookie would retire six of the first seven batters he faced.
In the sixth, Henn would get into trouble as a pair of singles, a walk and a wild pitch would allow the first run of the game to score of the Rockets. Michael Meintel came on and allowed a pair of sacrifice flies and Toledo (21-26) led 3-2 heading to the seventh inning.
In the seventh, the Green and Gold rallied to take a lead behind three base hits and a walk. Aaron Fields led the inning off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI single from Mercer to knot the game at 3-3. After a Cate walk, Kory Twede used a sacrifice fly to give the Raiders a 5-3 lead.
Cate extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an RBI single in the eighth inning, as the Raiders collected seven of their ten hits in the seventh and eighth innings of the contest.
After Meintel sat the Rockets down in order in the seventh, Schum retired all six batters he faced to collect his 12th save of the year. Meintel improved to 2-3 overall on the season, while Schum fanned two batters to push his team lead to 44 on the year.
Mercer and Fields each collected three hits in the contest, with four other WSU players accounting for one hit apiece. Mercer's three RBI's push his season total to 60 and the home run was his sixth of the season. Cate pushed his RBI total to 50, while Twede didn't record an official at-bat but reached base twice – via walk and HBP – as he also collected a pair of sacrifice hits.
The Raiders will return to action for their final series of the regular season against Cleveland State starting on Friday at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders and Vikings will take to the field for a 6:30 first pitch on May 15 under the lights at Nischwitz Stadium. The Wright State athletic department will honor all of their student-athletes at the contest on Friday as a part of their yearly Academic-Athletic Recognition night.
