All nine starters collected a hit for the Wright State Baseball team as they claimed a 13-6 victory in game one of a double-header at Youngstown State on Friday afternoon. The Green and Gold scored runs in seven of the eight frames and Greg Robinson tossed 4.1 innings in relief to help WSU to the win.
The Raiders scored one run in each of the first three innings, two coming on Jeff Mercer sacrifice flies and the other coming on a second inning home run from Quentin Cate, and led 3-2 heading into the fourth inning.
Starting pitcher Michael Woytek had given up only two unearned runs through three innings of work, but after walking a pair of batters with one out in the fourth, C.J. Morris ended his day with a three run homer to left-center field. The homer ended the day for Woytek after 3.2 innings of work with two strikeouts and five runs earned – only three earned.
Aaron Field and R.J. Gundolff singled with one out in the top of the fifth and Mercer smacked his 25th double of the season to plate the first run of the inning. Casey McGrew stepped in and took the next offering from Swenson deep to right field for a 385-foot, three-run home run to push WSU back ahead at 7-5.
WSU benefited from a pair of YSU errors to add to their lead in the sixth and seventh innings, extending their lead to 10-5. In the sixth, Tristan Moore started the frame with a single and came around to score in a throwing error by the YSU third baseman. In the seventh, WSU added a pair of runs all started with a walk from Cate. Ryan Ashe doubled down the right field line and on the play, Cate scored on a throwing error. Later in the frame, Moore struck out swinging, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach base and Ashe scampered home to score from third.
Cate drove in two more runs in the eighth inning after Mercer and McGrew singled to start the frame and the 12th double of the season for the California native accounted for the 11th and 12th runs of the game for WSU. Kory Twede smacked a solo home run to cap the scoring for the Raiders later in the frame – his fifth home run of the season – giving WSU a 13-5 edge.
Robinson didn't allow a run in his first 3.1 innings of work, but the Penguins tallied one run and ended the frame as the Raiders turned the inning ending triple play as a ground ball to Fields, the second baseman flipped to Gundolff who tossed to Mercer at first to complete the double play. But, the runner from third was waved home and Mercer tossed to Gerald Ogrinc who tagged the runner out at the plate to complete the triple play.
Robinson collected the victory, going 4.1 innings and allowing only one run on five hits. The right-hander fanned two and didn't walk a batter to improve to 1-2 on the season. Tyler Newhart came on and tossed the final inning and coaxed a double play ball to close out the game.
In the contest, all nine WSU players collected hits and each player scored a run in the opening game of the doubleheader. Twede and Cate each tallied three hits and four other WSU players collected two hits in the contest. Cate, McGrew and Mercer all drove in three RBI's in game one and Twede collected the only other RBI for the Raiders.
