Up 56-54 with just 5:31 remaining, the Wright State men's basketball team was outscored 17-5 by the Richmond Spiders the rest of the way as WSU came up short, losing 71-61 in the third round of the Chicago Invitational Challenge at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Senior point guard N'Gai Evans turned in a brilliant game with a career-high 24 points while Vaughn Duggins added 19 points and Troy Tabler ended with 11 points. Duggins grabbed six rebounds to lead the Raiders.
Richmond jumped out to an early lead and was up by as much as seven points with nine minutes to go in the first half until Wright State fought back to take a 38-36 lead in the locker room at half. Evans had 13 of his 24 points in the opening frame as he converted six of eight field goals.
Wright State kept the lead until three straight threes helped the Spiders to a late lead. Richmond held off Raider attacks as Cooper Land, Johann Mpondo and Armon Battle all fouled out of the contest.
WSU shot 51% from the field in the first half but ended shooting just 40% for the game. Richmond won the boards 36-24 as the Raiders committed only eight turnovers.
Wright State, now 3-2 on the season, will play Southern Illinois, who lost to #8 Purdue 79-60 in the other semifinal, in the consolation game Saturday at 5:00 Eastern.
