Wright State struggled offensively throughout the game, shooting just 22 percent, as the Raiders dropped a 56-50 decision to Southern Illinois in the consolation game of the Chicago Invitational Challenge Saturday night at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Southern Illinois scored the first 10 points of the contest before Cooper Land hit a free throw at the 13:22 mark of the first half. That foul shot, however, was the beginning of a 15-0 run for the Raiders over the next eight minutes, six coming from the senior forward.
But just when it looked like momentum was on the side of the Raiders, SIU closed the half with a 12-2 run to go up 24-17 at the break.
WSU hit just three of 23 shots in the opening 20 minutes but was nine of 10 from the foul line while the Salukis shot 32 percent and were eight of 14 from the stripe.
Southern Illinois scored five of the first six points of the second half to go up 29-18, only to see the Raiders cut the deficit to 36-32 on two N'Gai Evans foul shots with 6:47.
The Salukis, however, used a 9-2 spurt to push the lead back into double figures and Wright State would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
The Raiders shot just 22 percent for the contest compared to 34 percent for Southern Illinois and the Salukis led in rebounds (47-34), points in the paint (20-14) and bench scoring (20-9).
Evans, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led WSU with 11 points while Troy Tabler and Vaughn Duggins each had 10.
Gene Teague posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern Illinois (3-3) while Mamadou Seck had 11 points and eight boards off the bench.
Wright State (3-3) is right back on the road for two more next week, facing Cincinnati on Wednesday, December 1, at 7:00 followed by a trip to Detroit to open Horizon League play on Saturday, December 4, at noon.
