The Wright State baseball team split a Horizon League doubleheader at Butler on Sunday, falling 6-5 in the first game before bouncing back with a 5-3 win in game two.
After the Bulldogs scored a run in the first inning of the opener, WSU answered right back in the second on a home run to right center off the bat of Corey Davis. Butler, though, quickly regained the lead with five in the bottom of the frame to go up 6-1.
Davis hit his second home run of the game and eighth of the season in the fifth and Wright State scored three more in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5. After the first two batters were retired, Dan Marsh singled to center, went to second on a Jake Hibberd walk and scored on Tristan Moore's hit to center. Hibberd later scored on a wild pitch and Moore came in on Davis' single down the left field line.
The Raiders threatened to tie it in the seventh with runners on first and second and one out, but a fielder's choice and a ground out ended the game.
Jordan Marker pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit while striking out five, while offensively, Davis led the way with three hits and three RBI and Marsh had two hits.
WSU faced another early deficit in the second game as, despite scoring a run in the first on a Hibberd RBI single, Butler scored three times in the bottom of the inning.
The Raiders, though, went in front to stay with three in the third. Justin Kopale led off with a hit to right center and a walk to Marsh put runners on first and second. After a force out for the second out, Hibberd had a single to left to drive in Kopale and both he and Davis from third base pulled off a double steal to tie the game. Moore then made it 4-3 with a triple to plate Hibberd.
Wright State added another run in the fourth as after Ryan Ashe had a bunt single and went to third on a Kyle Mossbarger hit, Kopale laid down a squeeze bunt to drive in Ashe.
That turned out to be the last run of the game as Taylor Braun and Michael Schum shutout the Bulldogs over the final seven innings, with Braun (3-0) going three to pick up the win and Schum four to earn his seventh save of the season. Braun faced the minimum nine batters, striking out two, while Schum fanned four.
Offensively, Hibberd led the Raiders with three hits and two RBI.
Wright State (27-13, 11-4 Horizon) has two midweek games on the schedule this week as the Raiders head to Ohio for a 6:00 game on Tuesday followed by a matchup at Nischwitz Stadium against Cincinnati on Wednesday at 6:30.
