Box Score A Corey Davis RBI single in the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and, behind the pitching of Jordan Marker and Michael Schum, Wright State made that run stand up for a 4-3 win over Valparaiso Saturday in the winner's bracket finale of the Horizon League Baseball Championship at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU jumped out to the early lead by scoring three runs in the second. With one out, Davis walked and after Zach Tanner singled down the right field line, Ryan Ashe was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Justin Kopale hit a grounder off the glove of Crusader pitcher Jon Gulbransen for the first run and following a Kyle Mossbarger hit by pitch, Sam Picchiotti drove a single up the middle to plate Tanner and Ashe and make it 3-0.
Valparaiso, however, tied it with three in the top of the fifth as Andrew Bain had a two-run single and Robbie Robinson drove in the other run with a hit.
The Raiders, though, would score what turned out to be the game-winner in the bottom of the frame. Dan Marsh went the opposite way for a double down the left field line and scored two out later as Davis dropped a short single into center.
Both teams had chances the rest of the way, but neither could produce a run. WSU left two on in the seventh and Valpo posed a threat in the ninth as Michael Morman led off with a single into the hole at short and Chris Manning followed one out later with a roller along the third base line that stayed fair for a hit.
Michael Schum, however, picked up his ninth save of the year as he struck out Will Hagel and got Kyle Gaedele to ground out to end the game.
Jordan Marker (2-2) earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings in allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three. Offensively, Davis, Tanner and Kopale each had two hits for the Raiders
Wright State (35-17) again faces Valparaiso (25-31) in the tournament finals Sunday at 11:00, with the if necessary game set for 3:00. One win by WSU qualifies the Raiders for next week's NCAA Regionals.
