The Wright State women's basketball team nearly pulled off another second-half comeback before Detroit held on for a 75-64 Horizon League win Saturday at Calihan Hall.
The Titans led for much of the first half until six straight Raider points, the final four coming on baskets by Shaunda Sandifer, put WSU up 27-23 with 4:53 remaining. Detroit, however, responded with an 11-0 run, eight by Demeisha Fambro, and led 34-31 at the break.
Detroit then scored the first 11 points of the second half and held its biggest lead of the game at 48-33 following a Senee Shearer three with 15:56 to play.
Wright State, though, started on a comeback from there, going on a 17-6 run over the next eight minutes to cut the deficit to 54-50. Nine of those points came from Abby Jump off the bench as she hit three three-pointers.
Megan Hatter, however, ended the run with a three and WSU would get no closer than six the rest of the way as the Titans hit seven of eight free throws in the final minute.
Detroit shot 44 percent for the game, including 10 of 26 from three-point range, and was 15 of 21 at the foul line while WSU shot 34 percent, nine of 24 from behind the arc, and was just seven of 13 at the stripe. The Raiders, though, led in points off of turnovers (16-11), second-chance points (24-11) and fast-break points (14-0).
Demmings posted the first double-double of her career as she led Wright State with 16 points and 12 rebounds to go along with six assists. Fox nearly joined Demmings with a double-double of her own as she had 10 points and nine boards. Jump had nine points and three other Raiders scored eight.
Five players were in double figures for Detroit (9-10, 5-2 Horizon) as Hatter led the way with 16 while Shearer had 14, Shareta Brown and Fambro 13 each and Jalesa Jones 12.
Wright State (12-7, 5-2 Horizon) wraps up the first round of Horizon League play next week with a trip to Northeast Ohio, taking on Cleveland State on Thursday, January 26, at 7:00, followed by Youngstown State on Saturday, January 28, at 4:30.
