The Wright State men's basketball team used a 17-5 run to close to within two with 1:19 to play, only to see George Mason score the final six points for a 68-60 decision over the Raiders Tuesday night at WSU's Nutter Center.
Neither team had more than a four-point lead until the Patriots scored 10 straight, five by Shevon Thompson, to go up 31-19 with 4:22 remaining in the first half. The margin was 10 before a three-point play by Steven Davis made it 35-28 going into the halftime break.
George Mason hit 14 of 23 shots in the opening 20 minutes for 61 percent compared to 38 percent for WSU.
GMU took its biggest lead of the game at 47-30 with 15:14 left and appeared to be in command with a 57-43 advantage at the 8:33 mark. Wright State, however, stormed back with a 17-5 run over the next seven minutes, six of those coming from Chrishawn Hopkins and five by JT Yoho, to only trail 62-60 as Joe Thomasson hit two foul shots with 1:19 remaining.
The Raiders, however, would get no closer as the Patriots scored the final six points of the contest, four by Isaiah Jackson.
George Mason shot 52 percent for the game and led 16-11 in second-chance points as they finished with a 37-24 rebounding edge, 10-8 on the offensive end. WSU, meanwhile, shot 41 percent and led 19-7 in points off of turnovers, but was just eight of 18 from behind the arc.
Yoho led Wright State with 16 points while Thomasson added 13 as did Davis coming off the bench.
Thompson paced George Mason (5-6) with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds while Jackson added 22 points.
