Baseball Wins 3-1 at Akron

Box Score

After not collecting a hit until the sixth, the offense came alive for the Wright State baseball team in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits to defeat Akron 3-1 Wednesday night at Canal Park.

It was quite a pitcher's duel between starters Luke Mamer for the Raiders and Michael Steensen for the Zips as Mamer held Akron just a run on three hits through 5.1 innings while Steensen gave up just one hit over six shutout innings, a single by Michael Timm to left with two outs in the sixth.

The Wright State offense, however, would come alive in the seventh.  With one out, Kieston Greene doubled to left and Jeff Limbaugh followed with a double of his own to left to tie the game.  One out later, John Brodner drove in Limbaugh with the go-ahead run on a hit to left center and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, Brodner came in to score on a single to center off the bat of Alex Boeri.

Akron loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but Raider reliever E.J. Trapino came in at that point and end the threat by retiring Billy Salem on a fly ball to center.  The Zips then had two runners on in the ninth before Andrew Elliott picked up his ninth save of the season as Matt LaRocca lined into a double play to end the game.

The nine saves for Elliott tie him with Sam McAninch (1995) and Michael Schum (2011) for the eighth-most by a Raider in a season.

Logan Blair (2-0) earned the win with 1.1 innings in relief of Mamer, striking out three of the four batters he faced.

Wright State (22-16) returns to Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game series at Oakland, starting with a single game Friday at 3:00.
