Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team split a doubleheader at #18 Ole Miss Sunday, defeating the Rebels 3-1 in the opener before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
Ole Miss, who advanced to the final four of the College World Series last season before falling to eventual national runner-up Virginia, opened the scoring in the first game with an unearned run in the fourth.
It stayed that way until the seventh when the Raiders took the lead for good. With one out, Ryan Fucci reached on a bunt single and John Brodner followed with a walk to put runners on first and second.
That brought Gabe Snyder to the plate and, on a 1-2 pitch, he crushed a three-run home run to right center, his second of the season.
Ole Miss posed a threat in the ninth against WSU closer Andrew Elliott as Holt Perdzock walked with one out and went to third an out later on a single to center by Tate Blackman. Pinch-hitter Will Golsan then drove one to right center that right fielder Fucci made a diving catch on to end the game.
Elliott picked up his second save of the year, striking out one in two scoreless innings. Starter Jesse Scholtens (2-0) was the winning pitcher, scattering four hits and two walks in six innings while fanning four. Jack Van Horn and E.J. Trapino combined to retire Ole Miss in order in the seventh.
Fucci had two hits and a run scored to pace the Wright State offense.
In the second game, the Raiders took the early lead with a run in the third. Brodner led off with a hit to center and after advancing to third on a Fucci bunt and a Snyder groundout, scored as Mark Fowler singled through the left side of the infield.
The Rebels (4-2) answered with two in their half of the third, only to see WSU tie it with a run in the fourth. After Andrew McCafferty singled to right and Sean Murphy was hit by a pitch, Snyder went to the opposite field with a double to left to plate McCafferty.
Wright State had a chance to add more in the frame as Brodner walked to load the bases, but a popout and a strikeout ended the threat.
Ole Miss took the lead for good with a run in the fifth and held on from there as the Raiders stranded a runner on third in the sixth and had the bases loaded in the seventh before a double play ended the game.
Wright State (4-2) faces another nationally-ranked team next weekend (February 27-March 1) on the road as the Raiders face the #8-ranked Miami Hurricanes. The two teams will play single games on Friday (7:00), Saturday (7:00) and Sunday (1:00).
