Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team swept a doubleheader from Xavier to open the home portion of its schedule Wednesday, taking the opener 5-0 and the second game 6-3.
It was a scoreless pitcher's duel between Jeremy Randolph and Xavier's Greg Jacknewitz until WSU scored twice in the fourth. With one out, Ryan Fucci hit a towering fly ball over the fence in left for his fifth home run of the season and after Sean Murphy walked and stole second, he came in on a Michael Timm hit up the middle.
Wright State rounded out the scoring with three more in the fifth. Jason DeFevers reached second on an error to start the frame and scored as Mark Fowler tripled down the right field line. A bunt single from Mitch Roman made it 4-0 and Andrew McCafferty doubled to the gap in right center to drive in Roman.
Randolph (2-0), making his first-ever collegiate start, pitched six shutout innings for the win, scattering four hits and two walks. Logan Blair picked his first save of the season by blanking the Musketeers over the final three innings, surrendering one hit and one walk while striking out one.
Timm finished with three hits to pace the Raider offense while Roman had two hits.
In the second game, WSU picked up a run without a hit in the first as Fowler was hit by pitch, stole second, went to third on a Roman ground out and scored on a Fucci sacrifice fly.
Xavier tied it in the fifth, only to see Wright State answer with three in the sixth. Roman plated the first run with a hit and bases-loaded walks to Murphy and Gabe Snyder produced the final two runs.
The Raiders added two more in the seventh on a wild pitch and a Roman single to right center.
The Musketeers cut into the deficit with two in the eighth, but would get no closer as Andrew Elliott earned his third save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth, securing the win for E.J. Trapino (3-0).
Wright State (8-6) opens Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game home series against Oakland, starting with a single game Friday at 6:30.
