Box Score The Wright State baseball team improved to 6-0 at home on the season Wednesday, pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU opened the scoring with a run in the second. Michael Timm led off by dropping a double along the left field line and, after going to third on a Sean Murphy ground out, scored as John Brodner reached on an infield single.
The Norse looked to tie it in the third as the first two batters reached on singles, but the threat quickly ended as Raider first baseman Gabe Snyder made a diving catch of a bunt attempt by Kyle Colletta, threw to second baseman Timm covering first for the second out, who then threw to shortstop Mitch Roman covering second for a triple play.
It was the first triple play turned by the Raiders since doing it in the eighth inning of a 13-6 victory at Youngstown State on May 8, 2009.
NKU did eventually tie the score at 1-1 with a run in the fifth, only to see the Raiders go back in front with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Murphy started it with a double down the left field line and came in on a double to left off the bat of Mark Fowler.
WSU added another run in the seventh, a rally that started after the first two batters were retired. Hits by John Brodner and Jason DeFevers along with a Fowler walk loaded the bases for Roman, who beat out a chopper to third for an infield hit to plate Brodner.
Northern Kentucky tied it in the top of the ninth on a two-run single from Ryan Lefevers, setting the stage for the Wright State game-winner in the bottom of the inning.
DeFevers led off with walk and Fowler followed with a bunt to advance pinch-runner Derreck Garcia to second. Roman then struck out swinging, but reached first as the third strike bounced away from the catcher as Garcia went to third.
That brought up Andrew McCafferty, who drove a fly ball to right that was deep enough to knock in Garcia with the winning run.
Roman, Timm and Brodner each had two hits to pace the Raider offense. On the mound, starter Jeremy Randolph allowed just one run in five innings while E.J. Trapino pitched two scoreless frames and Logan Blair one.
Wright State (12-6) resumes Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game home series against Milwaukee, starting with a single game Friday at 6:30.
