Baseball Wins 1-0 in Series Opener With Milwaukee

Box Score

It was quite a pitcher's duel between Wright State's Jesse Scholtens and Milwaukee's Brian Keller Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium, with the Raiders pushing across a run in the second and making it stand up for a 1-0 win in Horizon League baseball action.

Sean Murphy drove in that lone run for WSU as after Michael Timm led off with a hit to left and went to second on a Ryan Fucci ground out, Murphy singled to center to plate Timm.

The Panthers threatened in the top of the third as Luke Meeteer tripled to right center with two out and in the sixth as Mitch Ghelfi tripled to left, again with two out, but Scholtens pitched out of both jams to preserve the shutout.

In the ninth, Milwaukee had two runners on base with two out before Scholten completed the shutout by striking out pinch-hitter Daulton Varsho.

Scholtens (4-0) allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out six in his first complete game and shutout as a Raider.  Keller (2-3) also pitched a complete game, scattering six hits and fanning three.

Wright State (13-6, 4-0 Horizon), who improved its home record this season to 7-0 with the win, will face Milwaukee (10-5, 2-2 Horizon) in the second-game of the weekend series Saturday at 2:00.
