Baseball Splits at Valparaiso

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team split a pair of one-run decisions at Valparaiso Saturday, falling 7-6 in the opener before rallying for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Raiders fell behind 7-2 after seven innings as the Crusaders scored twice in the first, second and sixth.  WSU's two runs came in the fourth on a RBI single by Sean Murphy and a run-scoring double from Ryan Fucci.

Wright State scored three times in the eighth, the final one on a Matt Morrow triple, and closed to within one in the ninth as Michael Timm doubled in Mitch Roman, who led off the inning with a single, but stranded the potential tying run at third as WSU's 11-game winning streak came to an end.

Timm and Gabe Snyder each had two hits in the first game while Murphy and Fucci both drove in two.

In the second game, WSU tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the third on a Roman double and an Andrew McCafferty sacrifice fly, only to see Valpo regain the lead with two of its own in the bottom of the frame.

It stayed that way until the Raiders rallied with three in the seventh to go in front for good.  With one out, Murphy walked and Roman single to right to put runners on first and third.  Another McCafferty sacrifice fly made it 4-3 and Timm followed with a double to left to plate Roman and tie the game.  A fielding error then allowed the go-ahead run to score.

The Crusaders had runners on second and third with no outs in the seventh and had two runners on in the eighth, but Andrew Elliott pitched out of both jams and then retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Elliott, Logan Blair and E.J. Trapino combined for seven innings of one-run, four-hit relief while striking out seven.  Blair (1-0) picked up the win.

Offensively, Roman, McCafferty and Timm each had two hits while Murphy scored twice.

Wright State (18-7, 7-1 Horizon) and Valparaiso (9-13, 5-3 Horizon) close out the series with a single game Sunday starting at 2:00 Eastern.
