Baseball Drops Series Opener Against Youngstown State

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team led 1-0 early, only to see Youngstown State score four times in the fourth and twice in the eighth before holding on for a 6-5 decision in the opener of a three-game Horizon League series Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.

WSU opened the scoring in the second on a Jason DeFevers RBI single and the Raiders still held that 1-0 edge through three innings as starter Jesse Scholtens retired the first nine batters he faced, striking out two.

The fourth, however, was a different story as the Penguins strung together five hits in scoring four runs, the key hit being a Shane Willoughby double to left center.

A solo home run to left off the bat of Sean Murphy, his second of the year, cut the deficit to 4-2 in the sixth, but Youngstown State added two insurance runs in the eighth on a double down the left field line by Alex Larivee.

Those two runs turned out to be the game-winners as Wright State rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth.  Hits by Gabe Snyder and Matt Morrow set the stage for Mark Fowler, who cracked his first home run of the year, a three-run blast to left with two out, trimming the margin to 6-5.

YSU brought on Anthony Konders at that point and he struck out the only batter he faced to earn the save.

The loss was the first for WSU at Nischwitz Stadium after winning the first 11 at home this season.  It snapped a 13-game home winning streak overall with the last setback being an 11-1 decision against Valparaiso on May 9, 2014.

Murphy and Fowler each led the Raider offense with two hits.

Wright State (20-10, 8-4 Horizon) and Youngstown State (8-19, 4-9 Horizon) will play the second game of the series Saturday at 2:00.
