Baseball Falls in Series Opener at UIC

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team outhit UIC 8-6, but two solo home runs proved to be the difference as the Flames won 3-1 in the first game of a Horizon League weekend series Thursday night at Curtis Granderson Stadium.

UIC hit the first of its two solo home runs in the first as Tyler Detmer connected on his first of the season to left.  Detmer then made it 2-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly to left, plating Carl Sugihara, who doubled and went to third on a Cody Bohanek bunt.

The Flames extended their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth as Gabe Dwyer hit a solo home run to left, his second of the year.

The Raiders cut the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth as Mitch Roman had a bunt single, went to second on a Michael Timm grounder and scored as Andrew McCafferty had a hit up the middle.

WSU had another hit in the sixth, but could not close the gap as a popup ended the frame.  Wright State then had two runners on base in the seventh and eighth, but UIC threw out the runner at the plate on a fly ball play to end the seventh and two strikeouts closed out the eighth.

Starter Luke Mamer (1-1) struck out five in 6.1 innings for the Raiders while relievers Jack Van Horn and E.J. Trapino combined for 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings.  Offensively, Sean Murphy led the way with two hits.

Wright State (19-8, 7-2 Horizon) and UIC (12-10-1, 8-2 Horizon) continue the weekend set with game two Friday at 7:00 Eastern.
