Box Score The Wright State baseball team led 5-1 after seven innings, but had to hold off a late Dayton rally before defeating the Flyers 5-4 Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
It was a scoreless pitcher's duel between WSU starter Jeremy Randolph and UD starter Mason Kutruff until the Flyers tallied an unearned run in the top of the fourth.
The Raiders, though, answered in a big way with four runs in their half of the fourth. After hits by Sean Murphy and Ryan Fucci, Matt Morrow hit into a force out to put runners on the corners. Jason DeFevers plated Murphy with a bunt single and Gabe Snyder followed with a hit to right to drive in Morrow and make it 2-1.
John Brodner then singled up the middle to knock in DeFevers and after walks to Roman and Fowler loaded the bases, Michael Timm also walked to force in the fourth run.
Mark Fowler rounded out the scoring for Wright State in the sixth with a solo home run to left center, his third of the season.
That home run turned out to be the winning run for WSU as Dayton scored two in the eighth and added another in the ninth on a walk and double to start the frame.
The Flyers bunted the potential tying run to third, but Andrew Elliott preserved the Raider victory and earned his sixth save of the year by striking out the final two batters of the game.
Randolph (6-0) picked up the win, allowing just the unearned run in seven innings as he scattered four hits and no walks while striking out seven.
Offensively, Fowler finished a perfect three-for-three while Snyder added two hits.
Wright State (28-10) hosts Miami Wednesday at 6:30.
