Box Score For the third time in the last four games, the Wright State baseball team won in extra innings as a Mark Fowler double in the 10th lifted the Raiders to an 8-7 win over Miami Wednesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU took advantage of two RedHawk errors in scoring twice in the first, but Miami answered in the top of the second on a three-run home run by Gary Russo. The Raiders, though, quick regained the lead with two more runs in the second on a two-run double off the bat of Mitch Roman.
Miami tied it with a run in the top of third, only to see Wright State score two runs for the third consecutive inning, this time on a Ryan Fucci two-run home run to left, his ninth of the season.
The Raiders tacked on another run in the sixth as Andrew McCafferty singled, stole second and scored on a Fowler hit to left, but the RedHawks used six hits in scoring three runs in the seventh to tie the game at 7-7.
It stayed that way until WSU came up with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. McCafferty again started the rally with a hit through the right side of the infield. John Brodner bunted McCafferty to second, but he remained at second as Roman struck out for the second out.
That brought Fowler to the plate and he provided the game-winner as he dropped a double into right center just out of the reach of the right fielder to plate McCafferty.
Fowler finished with three hits and three RBI after collecting three hits on Tuesday against Dayton. McCafferty had three hits and three runs scored while Roman and Fucci each had two hits.
Andrew Elliott (4-2) was the winning pitcher as he struck out two in throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, including getting the final out in the ninth to strand a Miami runner at third. E.J. Trapino fanned seven in 2.2 relief innings.
Wright State (29-10) heads to Youngstown State this weekend for a three-game Horizon League series, starting with a single game Friday at 5:30.
