Baseball Posts 6-2 Senior Day Win Over Valparaiso

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team completed a series sweep of Valparaiso Saturday with a 6-2 Senior Day victory at Nischwitz Stadium.

WSU opened the scoring with two runs in the first.  Sean Murphy reached on an error to start the inning and after Matt Morrow walked, both runners advanced a base with a steal.  A Michael Timm ground out plated Murphy with the first run and Mitch Roman followed with a hit to right center to drive in Morrow.

Valpo cut the deficit in half with a run in the fourth, only to see the Raiders answer in the bottom of the frame as Ryan Fucci connected for his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot to left center.

Wright State then broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the eighth as Gabe Snyder had a two-run single up the middle and Fucci added a sacrifice fly to left.

The Crusaders tallied a run in the ninth and had the bases loaded before Andrew Elliott induced a grounder for the final out in recording his 10th save of the season and third of the series.

Trevor Swaney (4-2) went the first five innings for the win, scattering seven hits and a walk in allowing just one run.  Jack Van Horn threw two scoreless innings and Logan Blair one.

Offensively, Morrow had two hits and two runs scored while Snyder and Fucci each drove in two.

Wright State (38-14, 21-8 Horizon) opens Horizon League Tournament play on Thursday, May 21, as the #2 seeded Raiders face the higher seeded winner of Wednesday's games, which will be either be #3 seed Milwaukee, #4 seed Valparaiso or #5 seed Youngstown State, at 4:00 Eastern at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Indiana.  The tournament continues through Saturday, May 23, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Wright State's 38 wins is the most for the Raiders since 1994 when they won 39 in back to back seasons.
