Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team was one out away from a series sweep at Milwaukee Saturday after winning the first game 14-6, but a three-run home run gave the Panthers a 5-4 decision in the second game.
WSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, including a two-run double off the bat of Michael Timm, only to see Milwaukee answer with two runs in its half of the first and another run in the second. The Raiders tacked on an unearned run in the third, but the Panthers went up 6-5 with three runs in the fourth.
From there, however, it would be all Wright State, starting with the tying run in the fifth on an Andrew McCafferty sacrifice fly. The Raiders went in front to stay with four in the seventh, highlighted by a Matt Morrow two-run double, added another in the eighth and three more in the ninth on Ryan Fucci's 11th home run of the season.
E.J. Trapino (5-0) picked up the win with four scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits and a walk while striking out four.
Offensively, Mitch Roman paced WSU with five hits and three runs scored while Timm had four hits, two RBI and two runs scored, Sean Murphy three hits and two runs scored and Morrow, Fowler and Fucci two hits each.
In the second game, Wright State again took the early lead with a run in the first on a Roman single. The Panthers tied it with a run in the fourth, only to see the Raiders regain the advantage at 2-1 with an unearned run in the fifth.
Milwaukee again tied it with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but WSU looked to be in control as they scored a run in the seventh on a RBI single by McCafferty and added an insurance run in the ninth on a solo home run from Gabe Snyder, his fifth of the year.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers had a leadoff single, but Andrew Elliott retired the next two batters. Another single, though, kept the game alive for Daulton Varsho, who ended the game with a three-run homer to right center.
Snyder led the Raider offense in the second game with two hits and two runs scored.
Wright State (34-14, 18-8 Horizon) closes out the regular season next week with four home games. After hosting Toledo on Tuesday at 6:30, the Raiders then welcome in Valparaiso for a three-game series, starting with a single game Thursday at noon.
